The Cemetry

I am not sure who said “Today I do what others won’t so that tomorrow I can do what others can’t”. This is in my head when I head out the door this morning leaving sleeping beauty under warm covers.
Headlamp on my head I run past the night shift workers, some hookers and general vagrants into the darkness.
I won’t make tonight’s track session with the lads so I decide to do my own hills. So I set off down Main Road Woodstock heading towards Rondebosch for my warm up. I did not have enough time to go to Rhodes Memorial for our usual suffer fest so a reasonably steep incline would have to do. I found Browning Road.
Warm up done, now 10 X 60 seconds or so of sprinting (or at least going as fast as I can) waits. The bottom of the road is illuminated and some early bird office workers huddle in a corner sheltering from the light drizzle. My first rep and I head off into the gloom. The further up I go the darker my surroundings, until I realise that I am running into a cemetery. I found a turning point at 62 sec around a skew curb stone. This would do nicely. Back down to the Main Road and a piece of chewing gum on the tar. I had to work fairly hard both on the ups and downs to not let the times slip (not at all as easy as running with a group). I manage to hold on to keep times within 6 seconds of the first rep.
Slowly, slowly my surroundings come into view and I can see the clouds lift in the distance. Today is going to be a good day! I jog home to start the day.

  1. And so I'm wishing you a good start for many days. And may the sleeping beauty be woken by your soft running step and, coffee mug in hand, give you another early morning treat, a warm kiss!
